The only character whom I was interested in was Natsume's grandmother (in flashbacks, of course). Other characters are not even worth mentioning as they are no better than a weak mist, hard to notice and has little effect. Other characters are barely better either, Madara, supposedly some super strong spirit, who for some reason spends most of his time in a fat cat's form, behaving like an idiot, did have potential, but screwed it over becoming comedy only character in the course of the show.

If I wanted to observe characters like him, I'd rather go to our local supermarket than watch this show, people like him work at the counters. Unlike mysterious characters like Kin or Medicine Seller, he is so completely normal and human it makes you wonder who could have ever thought it would be cool to have him lead the show. The main character, Natsume is your stereotypical introverted do-gooder. They are not terrible, but as the whole show, they are darn boring. Its characters are stereotypical cardboards and its philosophy is something my ten years old niece has already graduated from. Unfortunately, Natsume Yuujinchou possesses neither. One is to have godly characters, two is to make each episode stand for something philosophical (remember Kino no Tabi and Mushishi?). There are but two ways to make episodic anime kick ass. Though there are one or two songs (including opening), which are pleasant to listen to, they have little, if anything, to do with the overall atmosphere of the show.īoring is the first word that comes to mind. Just as the whole show, background music in Natsume Yuujinchou is completely bland and devoid of style. (I'm not talking about "Princess Mononoke", just in case) If you do not get what I am talking about, I will repeat again, check out Mononoke and it's art. Even though animation is nice - I will forget all about it after a week or two, as it is just too simplistic. However, even though everything is done very well technique wise, Natsume Yuujinchou lacks style which would set it apart from other hundreds of anime coming out this year. Character designs are well detailed and backgrounds are colorful. And even if you are, I would still highly recommend other, great shows of that type like Mononoke or Mushishi.Īs you would expect from an anime made in 2008 animation is high-end tech. Unless you are extremely interested in those shinto inspired japanese mythological creatures, you would do better not watching this show. As if the core is rotten, no spice will make it taste good. Even though it possesses above average directing and interesting creatures to show, nothing saves it from being utterly boring in the end. Basically, Natsume Yujinchou is an empty show, without an idea, without style and without suspense.

Yes, Natsume Yujinchou is a show which tried to mimic the anime above, but failed miserably since the only parts it managed to mimic were the parts which dragged the anime above down. And lastly it doesn't have high level philosophy which made Mushishi one of the best anime of the year. It doesn't have creepy and weird style which made Mononoke so cool.

It lacks the suspense which made Ghost Hunt interesting. Unfortunately, Natsume Yujinchou is probably the weakest addition to be added to that genre ever. Everything basically revolves around a person who interacts and solves various troubles caused by spirits. Natsume Yujinchou is one of those episodic japanese mythology inspired shows, which I have been seeing a lot lately. So, is not as complex or a whole living world as HxH, its also not a psychological and philosophical masterpiece as Gingaa or Monster, it has not great action of compelling characters as One Piece or Dragon Ball, but it makes you FEEL, it makes you want to call your friends and tell them that you value their friendship, and that is awesome. The purity and good intentions of the main character without been stupid or annoying are credible and foremost each experience that he has makes you feel related as if you were in his shoes, and that is great.
Natsume yuujinchou episode list series#
The series has nothing new to offer, and almost every aspect of it is average although the brilliance of it came in little things that they do pretty well managing to bring out your emotions, without being cheesy or corny. The main thing here is that I sheer tear with almost each episode, and its the first time in 35 years that something like that happens to me. Maybe I am rating it as an 8 because the subtitles from the source I'm using are pretty bad.
